The Edam Cheese Market takes place every Wednesday morning and is one of the most atmospheric traditions in North Holland. In the historic center of this picturesque town, Edam’s rich cheese-making history comes back to life. In the square, you can see how cheese carriers, traders, and farmers used to trade with each other—complete with traditional clothing, hand clapping bargaining, and of course the famous round Edam cheeses. As the market unfolds among the characteristic canals and historic buildings, you can experience the warm and nostalgic atmosphere of the past. During the Jan Haring Weekend, Monnickendam is all about sailing, socializing, and tradition for several days. From Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, participants gather in the harbor, where the weekend begins with the arrival of the ships and a welcome drink in the festival tent at the Leguit & Roos site on the Prooyen. On Saturday and Sunday, the boats depart from the harbor to the Markermeer for the races. After the briefing in the festival tent, the different classes start their races near Monnickendam. Afterwards, everyone returns to the harbor, where stories are shared and the weekend is celebrated together. The weekend concludes festively on Sunday with the award ceremony in the festival tent.
